總結: | "The Life of Saint Peter of Atroa was written shortly after the saint's death by the monk Sabas, a well-known figure of the middle ninth century. Sabas was, so to speak, the official biographer of the two great Bithynian saints of his times, that is, Ioannikios and Peter of Atroa. He was an eyewitness of several incidents he narrated in The Life of Saint Peter, being himself a spiritual son of the saint. Sabas describes some other incidents on the basis of the information given to him by several companions of the saint who had witnessed them. He was thus a conscientious compiler of his material, which he tried to ascertain and verify as exhaustively as possible. An ardent iconophile, Sabas took care to present Peter as a staunch, uncompromising defender of the orthodox faith. He was particularly interested in presenting Peter as equal to the great ascetics of the past. Despite his zeal for preserving his hero's memory, Sabas did conceal occasional details that could harm his reputation. But even so, generally speaking, he has left us a trustworthy document, replete with prosopographical, topographical, and other details related to the saint's life and his social and political milieu, which contribute to what appears to be a quite accurate reconstruction of his monastic career"-- |
