In this article we compare the approaches of Pedro de Ribadeneira and those of Francisco Suárez. In them we find a response to the religious differences in modern Europe and within the Hispanic Monarchy of a relative openness, but this is more correct applied to the integrity of Suárez’s works than to those of other writers influenced by the reason of State, like Ribadeneira. Suárez’s reflections on the conversion of the moriscos were interpreted at the time as support for religious tolerance. And still today some academics value them as a model of respect for minorities useful for our time. However, these statements by Suárez are ambivalent and that is why I prefer to classify them as "tolerance objections", that is, because these ideas can facilitate freedom of worship, but they can also reinforce a tight control of particular ways of life. In any case, this Ignatian tradition offers an alternative potentiality of respect for alterity, more clearly in the work of Francisco Suárez than in that of Pedro de Ribadeneira. | ||
| 520 | |a Durante la primera modernidad, pensadores de la Segunda Escolástica y la Sociedad de Jesús contribuyeron a facilitar una mayor cercanía a la diversidad cultural y religiosa. En este trabajo comparamos los planteamientos de Pedro de Ribadeneira y los de Francisco Suárez. En ellos encontramos una respuesta a las diferencias religiosas en la Europa moderna y dentro de la Monarquía Hispánica de un relativo aperturismo, pero esto es más correcto aplicado a la integridad de los textos de Suárez que a los de otros escritores influidos por la razón de Estado, como Ribadeneira. Las reflexiones de Suárez sobre la conversión de los moriscos fueron interpretadas en su época como un apoyo a la tolerancia religiosa. Y todavía hoy algunos académicos las valoran como un modelo de respeto de las minorías útil para la actualidad. Sin embargo, esas afirmaciones de Suárez son ambivalentes y por eso prefiero calificarlas como de "reparos de la tolerancia", esto es, porque esas ideas pueden facilitar la libertad de cultos, pero también pueden reforzar un férreo control de los modos de vida particulares. Con todo, esta tradición ignaciana ofrece una potencialidad alternativa de respeto a la alteridad, más clara en la obra de Francisco Suárez que en la de Ribadeneira. | ||
