Summary: | Although St Davids is remote from other parts of Britain by the overland route, it has always been readily accessible by sea. Freestones, quarried and worked at faraway sites and typically transported by sea and river, are frequently encountered in medieval ecclesiastical buildings, where they were used for structure, decoration, and monuments. Polishable limestones (marbles) were similarly transported over large distances for a similar range of functions. With a little specialist knowledge these materials are usually readily identifiable. Hence they may give information about extraction, craft activity and supply routes, as well as about architectural practices and ownership links to source areas, at certain times in a building's history. This article summarises the variety of lime- stones and marbles that were brought from outside the area, doubtless by sea, to be used in the cathedral at St Davids, up to the time of the Reformation. |
