| Summary: | The article examines the description of extraordinary events, prodigies and miracles (mirabilia and miracula) in the missionary documents in the 17th century, focusing on the Franciscan and Jesuit orders and their Chinese mission. It aims at analysing the uses (and misuses) of these events in describing the history and propaganda of the mission, in the discursive construction of the evangelization enterprise. To do so, it studies the different versions of the miraculous events in missionary reports and letters, on the one hand, and in European treatises and chronicles, on the other. The article aspires to contribute to a broader debate on the importance of rhetorical, stylistic and argumentative strategies in the construction of the past in the historiographical writing El artículo examina la descripción de los sucesos extraordinarios, de los prodigios y de los milagros (los mirabilia y miracula) en la documentación misionera del siglo XVII (con énfasis especial en textos franciscanos y jesuitas y en el apostolado de ambas órdenes en el imperio chino). Su objetivo es trazar los usos de estos eventos en la escritura historiográfica de las órdenes, su empleo para fines propagandísticos en pro de una determinada imagen de la empresa evangelizadora. Para ello, revisa las re-escrituras de estos acontecimientos, es decir, sus diferentes versiones en las relationes y las epístolas misioneras, por un lado, y en las crónicas y textos europeos, por el otro, analizando el papel y la relevancia de las estrategias retóricas, estilísticas y argumentativas en la construcción del pasado, en la escritura de la historia. |
