The most dominant of these is that of God and Moses, but since it is so well known, I shall not deal with it at length. The main discussion here will be centered on the other traditions. These can be considered in two categories: I — the traditions of sacred guidance, expressed in various forms of God's revelation, (the pillars of the cloud and of the fire or through the path of the ark), and through the medium of an angel; II — the tradition of a clearly secular guidance, reflected in the search of the Israelites for a man who knew the byways and the water resources of the desert (Num. 10:29—32). In each of the traditions of the pillar and of the angel, there are secondary interlocking traditions about their origin and the form they took. It is otherwise with the tradition of the ark, which is mentioned only once (Num.10 : 33—36), but is tied in with two other traditions, those of Reuel (10:29—32) and with the pillar of cloud (10:34). Furthermore, two complementary motifs are found in verses 33—36 : the ark that leads the Israelites through the desert and the ark that goes forth to lead the people in battle. | ||
