Summary:A review of Mesopotamian textual corpora and iconographic material from prehistory to the end of cuneiform era reveals an abundant presence of insects in many aspects of Mesopotamian daily life, from food and medicine to literature and mathematics, as well as in mythology, divination, omens and rituals. Entomological information contained in cuneiform tablets, including knowledge of metamorphosis, is investigated and insect symbolism in ancient Mesopotamia is discussed.
