The sentence of the Inquisition comprised the burning of the book, a five-year exile to Brazil, catechesis, and some spiritual penances. This article is a micro-history of Francisco Barbosa’s trial in the Inquisition of Lisbon between 1608 and 1610. Its main goal is to reconstruct the biography of a seventeenth-century sorcerer from the unusual perspective of dissimulation. Taking into account Barbosa’s book of sorceries, this article also intends to inaugurate a broader reflection on the compilation of incantations as a counterpoint to the pious practice of collecting biblical and patristic citations in commonplaces, through the introduction of the concept of sortilegia. | ||
