The authority of the two protagonists Peter and Paul serves two purposes: on the one hand, to lend pedagogical-theological emphasis and credibility to the admonitions of the two apocalypses, and, on the other hand, to introduce their compassion and empathy with the punished. At the same time, God?s longanimity and mercy are emphasized, but also his justice and consistency with regard to the allocation of reward and punishment. The contribution presents these aspects in the contextual coexistence of the two apocalypses and then also links them to two other works: (a) to the so-called Descent of Christ into Hell or Harrowing of Hell (descensus ad inferos) and, thus, the liberation of the righteous from the underworld and the victory over death, and (b) to Dante Aligieri?s famous Divina commedia and its drastic depiction of the place of torment and horror. By doing so, lines of connection and development between texts are shown that, together with pictorial representations, have significantly shaped our imaginary image of hell now and then. | ||
