Découverts sur la route menant de Palmyre à Apamée sur l’Oronte, ces milliaires datent principalement de l’époque des Sévères, avec une première intervention en 198, suivie d’une restauration en 212 (ou 213). Des travaux plus tardifs semblent pouvoir être mis en lien avec l’achèvement de la Strata Diocletiana à la fin du iiie s. Les milliaires montrent que cette route constituait un axe majeur entre Palmyre et les centres de la vallée de l’Oronte, ce qui lui confère d’importantes fonctions stratégiques, militaires et commerciales. Une étude préliminaire de l’état actuel de la route et de ses milliaires permet aussi de restituer l’évolution des conditions environnementales de la région entre la période romaine et l’Antiquité tardive. L’oasis de Palmyre était plus étendue que de nos jours et entourée par une bande de terres propices à l’agriculture. L’emplacement des bornes milliaires le long de la traversée de l’un des principaux oueds de la région semble indiquer la stabilité des conditions hydrographiques à l’époque romaine. Plus tard, à l’époque tardive, la région a connu une dégradation environnementale majeure qui a entraîné une érosion éolienne intensive des sols et des inondations catastrophiques. | ||

Preliminary note about the Roman milestones discovered West of Palmyra and their geomorphological contextDuring the archaeological survey in the West-Palmyrene, carried out by the Syrian-Italian Mission, were discovered 16 milestones, some of them still bearing readable inscriptions. These milestones marked the road from Palmyra to Apamea, on the Orontes valley, and are mostly dated to the Severan age. A first intervention took place in 198 and a restoration in 212 (or 213). Later works seem to be related to the achievement of the Strata Diocletiana, at the end of the 3rd century. These milestones show that this road was a fundamental axis linking Palmyra and the major Orontes’ centres, with important strategic, military and commercial functions. A preliminary study of the present state of the road and its milestones allows to infer the environmental conditions of the area during the Roman period and the Late Antiquity. The oasis of Palmyra was more extended than today and a belt of deep soils, suitable for agricultural practice, surrounded it. The location of the milestones along the crossing of a main wadi may indicate hydrographical stability during the Roman period. Later on, during the Late Antiquity, the area suffered an important environmental degradation that caused intensive aeolian erosion of soils and catastrophic floods. | ||
| 520 | |a على الطريق من تدمر إلى أفاميا. ملاحظة أولية حول المعالم الطرقية الرومانية المكتشفة غرب تدمر وسياقها الجيو-آثاري. خلال مسح أثري أجرته البعثة السورية الإيطالية في المنطقة التدمرية الغربية، تم اكتشاف ١٦ علامة طرقية كان بعضها لا يزال يحمل نقوشاً مقروءةً. تم اكتشاف هذه المعالم على الطريق المؤدي من تدمر إلى أفاميا على نهر العاصي ويعود تاريخها بشكل أساسي إلى فترة سفيروس، حيث أنشئت أولاً في عام ١٩٨، ثم تلتها أعمال ترميم في عام ٢١٢ (أو ٢١٣). جرت أعمال لاحقة مرتبط بإكمال طريق ديوكلتيانوس في نهاية القرن الثالث. تُظهر هذه المعالم أن هذا الطريق كان محورا رئيسيا بين تدمر ومراكز وادي العاصي مما يمنحها وظائف استراتيجية وعسكرية وتجارية مهمة. كما أن النتائج الأولية لدراسة الحالة الراهنة للطريق ومعالمها تسمح لنا بإعادة بناء تطور الظروف البيئية للمنطقة بين العصر الروماني والعصور القديمة المتأخرة. كانت واحة تدمر أكبر مما هي عليه اليوم وتحيط بها قطعة أرض صالحة للزراعة. يشير موقع المعالم الطرقية على طول معبر أحد الأودية الرئيسية في المنطقة إلى استقرار الظروف المائية خلال العصر الروماني. لاحقاً وفي فترات أحدث، شهدت المنطقة تدهورا بيئيا كبيرا أدى إلى تآكل التربة بفعل الرياح والفيضانات الكارثية. | ||
