Small-sized, it was intended to accommodate the bones of a child. Its decoration mimicks stone ashlar courses with rosettes. This type of decoration is known on some twenty ossuaries. They originate almost exclusively from the tombs of Jerusalem, mostly from the eastern necropolis of the city, and were produced in the Herodian period (2nd half of 1st c. bc to ad 70). The presumed origin of the ossuary may be therefore confirmed since it belongs to this group of ossuaries ornamented with ashlar-wall design. The chosen interpretation of this iconography, unknown in the funerary decorations of the Greco-Roman world, connects it with the sanctuary of Jerusalem. The representation of its masonry of stones framed with margins would have suggested its perimeter wall. | ||
| 520 | |a L’article est consacré à l’un des ossuaires juifs des collections du musée archéologique des Pays de la Bible à Paris. De petites dimensions et donc destiné à accueillir les ossements d’un enfant, il présente un décor d’imitation d’assises de pierre complété de rosettes. Ce type de décor est attesté sur une vingtaine d’ossuaires. Provenant presque exclusivement de tombes de Jérusalem, en majorité de la nécropole orientale de la ville, ils ont été produits à la période hérodienne (2e moitié du ier s. av. n. è. à 70 de n. è.). En le replaçant au sein de ce groupe d’ossuaires à décor de maçonnerie, l’étude permet de confirmer l’origine présumée de l’objet. L’interprétation retenue de cette iconographie, inconnue dans les décors funéraires du monde gréco-romain, la met en relation avec le sanctuaire de Jérusalem, dont on aurait suggéré le mur d’enceinte à travers la représentation de son appareillage de blocs à marges d’encadrement. | ||
