The Baptism scene emphasizes the divine nature of Jesus, announced and prefigured by the prophets of the Old Testament depicted scene in the upper corners of the panel. The icon with its two sides, the Virgin Hodegitria emphasizing the human nature of Jesus, and the baptism his divine nature, says the hypostatic union of the two natures of Jesus. Some ancient texts associate the rite of baptism with rivers and other water sources, where sanctification could take place. This is why the link of the Kaftoun icon with the ritual of baptism on the day of the Epiphany is plausible, especially as the monastery is located at the edge of Nahr el-Jaouz river. The panel was held so that the image of the Virgin, to whom was dedicated the monastery, was directed forward while the baptism scene was facing the congregation. All this testifies to the liturgical function of the icon. | ||
| 520 | |a L’icône de Kaftoun (milieu-troisième quart du xiiie siècle) est un panneau biface avec la représentation de la Vierge Hodigitria (Conductrice) sur un côté et le baptême du Christ sur l’autre. La scène de baptême met l’accent sur la nature divine de Jésus annoncée et préfigurée par les prophètes de l’Ancien Testament représentés dans les angles supérieurs du panneau. L’icône avec ses deux faces, la Vierge Hodigitria soulignant la nature humaine de Jésus, et son baptême insistant sur sa nature divine, affirme l’union hypostatique des deux natures de Jésus. Certains textes anciens associent le rite du baptême à des rivières et autres sources d’eau, où la sanctification pouvait avoir lieu. C’est pourquoi le lien de l’icône de Kaftoun avec le rituel du baptême le jour de l’épiphanie est plausible, d’autant que le monastère se situe au bord du fleuve Nahr el-Jaouz. Le panneau était porté de telle sorte que la face avec l’image de la Vierge, à qui était dédié le monastère, était dirigée vers l’avant alors que l’image du baptême était face aux fidèles. Tout ceci témoigne de la fonction liturgique de l’icône. | ||
| 520 | |a تعميد المسيح على أيقونية كفتون ثنائية الوجهين، وارتباطها بالعذراء المرشدة (الهادية)أيقونة كفتون (من منتصف الربع الثالث للقرن الثالث عشر) هي لوحة ثنائية الوجهين: تظهر على وجهها الأول صورة العذراء المرشدة (الهادية) وعلى الوجه الثاني مشهد تعميد المسيح، وهي تعبر عن الاتحاد الأقنومي للطبيعتين: حيث تشير العذراء المرشدة إلى طبيعته البشرية والعمادة إلى طبيعتيه الإلهية التي بشر بها أنبياء العهد القديم المصورين في الزاويتين العلويتين للوحة. وتربط بعض النصوص القديمة طقس التعميد بالأنهار والينابيع، ويمكننا كذلك ربط أيقونة كفتون بعيد التعميد لوقوع كنيسة السيدة العذراء الممثلة بها على ضفاف نهر الجوز. كانت الأيقونة محمولة في الدير وفيها صورة العذراء متجهة نحو الأمام، أما مشهد التعميد فكان موجهاً نحو المصلين، مما يدل بشكل واضح على الوظيفة الشعائرية للأيقونة. | ||
