Summary: | This article takes up and discusses recent criticisms made of the category "religion" within Religious Studies, proposing an approach from a decolonial perspective. The criticism indicates that the category religion was invented by European modernity with colonialist intentions, lacking clarity regarding its referent and, therefore, is devoid of analytical value by distorting the phenomena to which it refers. This criticism of religion unfolds into three aspects: a) it is an academic invention and has no clear referent and, therefore, has no analytical relevance; b) it is the result of theological smuggling; c) it is a colonialist notion. In the second part, the article argues that, despite its limitations and imperfections, the category of religion when understood within the different contexts and strategies of investigation and resistance remains relevant and pertinent. |
