However, this renunciation is not the provider of Thomas' criterion for recognizing genuine obedience. Its only criterion of discernment is the specific object on which obedience bears, namely the precept, emanating from a legitimate authority and which one aims to accomplish. This notion of precept strictly delimits the domain over which an authority exercises its superiority and, thereby, protects the obedience of the subordinate by means of a " right " against any abusive extension of this domain of superiority. Saint Thomas thus delivers precious benchmarks for a correct conception and practice of obedience as well as a rampart against its possible disfigurements. He even offers a thought of resistance, which is not disobedience but practical judgment oriented by the demands of charity, the ultimate end of all obedience. The reading proposed here of question 104 of the Secunda Secundae of the Summa theologiae, devoted to the virtue of obedience, has been enriched, beforehand, by the decisive extensions that Thomas has given it in his treatise on religious life, but it is also illuminated, afterwards, by the firm determinations on political obedience that he put forward in his treatise on law. | ||

Saint Thomas livre ainsi de précieux repères pour une juste conception et pratique de l'obéissance aussi bien qu'un rempart contre ses défigurations possibles. Il offre même une pensée de la résistance, qui n'est pas désobéissance mais jugement pratique orienté par les exigences de la charité, fin ultime de toute obéissance. La lecture ici proposée de la question 104 de la Secunda Secundae de la Somme de théologie, consacrée à la vertu d'obéissance, s'enrichit, en amont, des prolongements décisifs que Thomas en a donnés dans son traité de la vie religieuse, mais elle est aussi éclairée, en aval, par les fermes déterminations sur l'obéissance politique qu'il avait énoncées dans son traité des lois. | ||
