In shielding the natural sciences from ideological influence and political interference, scientific claims are the best examples we have of intellectually justified belief claims about the nature of our world and our existence in it. Scientists, however, are not the only people making epistemic claims; that is, knowledge claims about the world and other matters such as the meaning of life. And early in his life the author was one of those other people, having inherited, so to speak, a set of extra-scientific beliefs about the world from another institution, the Church.
