Maria di Grottaferrata (Rome) to the status of "Escarchic Monastery" in 1937. The unedited documentation published and discussed here demonstrates that behind this measure there was a direct request by the monastic community for the Holy See's "restitution" - historically unfounded- of the status of Abbatia Nullius, of which it would have been deprived by Benedict XIV in 1747. This purely Western genesis gave birth to the neologisms "Exarchic Monastery" and ''Archimandrite Exarch", lexical clones of Abbatia and Abbas Nullius. The study concludes with a reflection on the Apostolic Exarchate as an institution more suited than the ordinary Exarchate for an ltalo-Greek cenobium founded in the Metropolis of the Bishop of Rome. This is especially relevant considering the inherent fragility of the monastery and the delicate moment that it is going through. | ||
