| 520 | |a 살레카나(sallekhaṇā)는 무기한 단식을 하며 죽음을 맞이하는 자이나교의 전통적인 임종 수행법이다. 신에 대한 예배나 귀의가 아닌 자신의 본성(아트만)에 자력적 수행에 의해 도달하는 것을 종교적 목표로 삼는 자이나교에서 수행은 의례(ritual)의 핵심요소이다. 특히 자이나교의 수행은 서약(vrata)의 지침으로 체계적으로 규범화되어 실행되며, 수행의 마지막은 살레카나로서 마무리된다. 수행자가 선택할 수 있는 추가 서약에 위치한 살레카나 서약은 자이나교의 임종 수행이자, 임종의례이다. 본고는 살레카나를 세 단계 죽음의례 가운데에서도 첫 단계인 임종의례로서 파악하고, 임종의례의 양식을 살레카나 브라타(서약)의 분석을 통해 고찰하였다. 살레카나 브라타의 임종의례적 요소를 실행 주체와 조건, 실행목적, 실행 장소와 시간, 실행의 과정, 실행의 금기사항(위배사항)으로 분석하여 제시하였다. 또한 현대에도 여전히 실행되고 있는 살레카나의 사례들과 사회적 자살법과의 충돌 논란등의 문제에 관해서도 언급하였다. 살레카나를 임종의례의 측면에서 고찰하여 제시하고자 한 본 연구의 목적은 오늘날 현대인이 당면한 웰다잉(Well-dying)이라는 근본적 숙제에 대한 더 나은 해답을 함께 모색해보기 위해서이다. | ||
| 520 | |a The Sallekhaṇā of Jainism is the traditional practice of fasting up to death. Jainism, whose religious goal is to reach one’s nature (ātman, jīva) by one’s practice, rather than worship or devotion to God. In Jainism, asceticism is a key element of ritual. The practice of Jainism is systematically standardized and practised according to the guidelines of the vows(vrata), and the end of Jain’s can be said to be concluded with Sallekhāna. Sallekhana practice is a Jain practice at the time of death and a ritual of dying. This paper identifies Sallekhāna as the dying ritulal among the three stages of death rituals in Indian religions and examines the style of death rites through the analysis of Sallekhaṇā Vrata. It was analyzed and presented in terms of execution conditions and subjects of Sallekhaṇā Vrata, the purpose of execution, place and time of execution, taboos (violations) of execution, and process of execution. The conflict controversy was also briefly mentioned. Its value should be reconsidered as a form of complete death that completes life and death subjectively in modern society where the task of well-dying has become heavy. | ||
