| Riepilogo: | Gregory of Nazianzus, one of the Cappadocian Fathers, is known by Eastern Tradition as "the Theologian". However, his work as a philosopher is less known and often underestimated. We intend to present the specific mode of philosophy which is found in Gregory’s speeches. We will begin by examining the first of his theological discourses, where he establishes the conditions in which the human being can speak about God. Secondly, we will examine his dedication to literature and oratory, in order to characterize his thought as "rhetorical philosophy" or "philosophical rhetoric". The third section will face the confrontation of Gregorius with the new Arians of his time, especially Aetius of Antioch and Eunomius of Cyzicus. He rejects the nominalism of these heretics and their abuse of the resources of Aristotelian logic, which he calls "technology". Our author attaches greater importance to the reality of God than to the words that name the Divine. Finally, we will try to summarize the relationship between reason and faith, according to his well-known formula: "faith gives fullness to reasoning." |
