Drawing up the recent critical edition of the two vitae, I analyze these two texts within the contexts of Hildegard's theology of the monastic life and her ecclesiology. In composing these two works, Hildegard sought to bring into sharp relief the two axes around which the monastic life ought to function. In the Vita Disibodi, she traces out a vertical axis, in which the ultimate trajectory of the monastery is the eremitic life; but that this requires a full adherence to the Rule of Benedict. In the Vita Ruperti, she delineates a horizontal axis, or the relationship between a monastery and the larger ecclesial community. Success in one was contingent upon the other as true monastic reform for Hildegard encompassed not only a community that fully instantiated the Rule of Benedict but also a community that embraced an active role in the salvation of all Christians. | ||
