总结:This article examines the theme of war in the writings of Luisa de Carvajal y Mendoza (1566-1614), a Spanish noblewoman who secretly traveled to England in 1605 to serve within the covert Catholic community in London. Even though scholars have noted the militant tenor of Carvajal’s writings and political activism, they have not examined warfare and militancy as central themes in her works. This study argues that the martial language, imagery, and values expressed in Carvajal’s writings reflect a general policy of militant Catholicism that was shaped by Carvajal’s aristocratic background and close affiliation with a group of English Jesuits. More significantly, her writings reveal how women of rank engaged in politicomilitary affairs and envisioned militant roles for themselves and other women during the political and religious conflicts of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.
