First, a comparison of John with other popular first-century bce prophets identified by Flavius Josephus reveals that the eschatological character of his deed, inspired by the national tradition and whose impact on the local population was far from negligible, was inevitably to come up against the philhellenism of Antipas. Then, the tetrarch could not risk that John’s challenge would destabilize public order in his land when he was charged by Rome to ensure peace, as his father Herod before him, on the eastern border, at a moment when relations with the Parthians and Nabataeans were strained. | ||

La mise à mort de Jean sur l’ordre d’Antipas montre que ce dernier a pris très au sérieux la contestation dont il a été l’objet. Cette décision est guidée par deux facteurs principaux. Tout d’abord, une comparaison de Jean avec les autres prophètes populaires du ier s. de notre ère repérables sous la plume de Flavius Josèphe révèle que le caractère eschatologique de son action, inspirée par la tradition nationale et dont l’impact sur la population locale était loin d’être négligeable, devait inévitablement se heurter au philhellénisme d’Antipas. Ensuite, le tétrarque ne pouvait pas prendre le risque que la contestation de Jean ne déstabilise l’ordre public dans son territoire alors qu’il était chargé par Rome d’assurer la paix, comme son père Hérode avant lui, sur la frontière orientale, à un moment où les relations avec les Parthes et les Nabatéens étaient tendues. | ||
