| 520 | |a The subject of this article is the analysis of selected examples of terracottas coming from Graeco-Roman Egypt in the context of their religious significance and function. Art, and with it terracotta production, constitutes an unusually rich and and interesting collection of objects which when they occasionally turn up in sacred contexts allow a multi-faceted definition, touching on a whole host of social, political or religious questions. Studying a variety of statuary representations on terracottas it becomes possible not only to define the religious preferences of contemporary society, but also to study a range influences and define mutual correlations that had an influence on the formulation of the representational forms of individual gods and goddesses. The first researchers dealing with these materials and their specifics in their studies underlined the important role of this material, particularly in the context of recognizing the religious system, ritual and cult. The French researcher F. Dunand formulated the view, that Egyptian terracottas coming from the Hellenistic period as equally in the Roman, in the majority of cases fulfilled a religious function, which linked them directly with the world of the sacred, cult and ritual. As far as one can judge these material objects equally reflect official religiosity as they do the individual and private spheres of belief, which play an unusually important role in the definition of the systems of belief of those times. | ||
