520 |a After the failed expectations of the Arab Spring, the coup in Egypt and the chaos in Libya, Yemen, and the war in Syria and Iraq, an extremist group has become a magnet for the youth who are unconvinced with the reform process in the Middle East. During 2013 and 2014 the so-called Islamic State (IS) emerged as the new leader of the global jihadi movement. It operates in a chaotic part of the world and its stated goal is to restore an Islamic state, or caliphate, in the entire region. It is probably the most barbaric Islamic fundamentalist group in the recent history of jihadism, based on a ruthless strand of medieval Islam, using extreme violence, including indiscriminate killings, as its principle modus operandi and recruitment lure. This article traces the evolution of this group, its ideology and actions. It analyses the takfiri doctrine as the group’s justification for its use of extreme violence and the wider operational ramifications of this principal pillar of IS. It examines the targets of Daesh and the recruitment domains of its fighters. The article gives data on foreign fighters fighting with IS and their profiles. It also scrutinises the principal motivations for young men and women from western countries to join this terrorist group. This work gives the organisational structure of the Islamic State, some analysis of life in areas controlled by IS and details of operations outside in other parts of the world.
