Cet article présente les résultats de la première étude ethnographique avec des Témoins de Jéhovah parmi une communauté autochtone au Canada. À partir d’un terrain de recherche en ligne couvrant une période de dix mois avec des Témoins anishinabeg (Algonquins) de Kitigan Zibi (Outaouais, Québec), j’explore les motivations derrière la décision de devenir Témoin de Jéhovah pour ces derniers. Je montre également que les premières conversions à Kitigan Zibi sont principalement dues à un contexte historique double qui a créé un terrain fertile pour la conversion. Enfin, je propose le concept de « conversion à petite échelle » comme une autre façon de concevoir la transmission intergénérationnelle de la religion. | ||

This article presents the result of the first ethnographic study with Jehovah’s Witnesses among Aboriginal peoples in Canada. From an online field of research spanning over a period of 10 months with Anishinabe (Algonquin) Witnesses from Kitigan Zibi (Outaouais, Quebec), I explore the motivations behind the decision to become a Jehovah’s Witness for the latter. I also show that the first conversions in Kitigan Zibi are mainly due to a dual historical context that created a fertile ground for conversion. Finally, I propose the concept of ‘small-scale conversion’ as another way to conceive the intergenerational transmission of religion. | ||
