Summary: | The powerful challenge to the church is the no-nonsense statement of Paul VI in 1975, 'The split between the Gospel and culture is without doubt the drama of our time... [Every] effort must be made to ensure a full evangelization... of cultures'. John Paul II repeated the challenge in 1982 with even sharper urgency: 'I have considered the church's dialogue with the cultures of our time to be a vital area, one in which the destiny of the world... is at stake'. Inculturation is the term that describes this dialogue. Inculturation is a fundamental imperative of the Gospel itself. In fact, Jesus Christ was extremely sensitive in his preaching to the cultures of his day. As the master of inculturation, he knew that his message had to penetrate to the 'very roots' (EN 25) of cultures. |
