Literary sources contain just few allusions to the location and the aspect of the burial but some interesting iconographic evidence helps us to more precisely understand how the Egyptian mind visualized the tomb of the great god of the afterworld. Labeled in the texts as "Mound of Osiris", and illustrated according to a specific landscape connotation (a hill surmounted by trees and surrounded by waters), such a mythical place also shows a multilayered and articulated structure, resulting from the combination and mutual integration of three main semantic features (hill; water; trees). Iconic form and symbolic structure will be, therefore, the two focal points discussed in the present analysis on the representation tomb of Osiris: on the one hand, the corpus of documents considered will enable us to follow its historical development through artistic and monumental elaboration; on the other, by breaking the whole icon down in its elementary units, it will be possible to elucidate the polysemy of each of them and to highlight the network of mythical and symbolic references underlying the perception and cultural construction of such a sacred space of the Egyptian religious imaginary.
