Description
Summary:Catholic theologian and ethicist Lisa Sowle Cahill is by now a well-respected voice in theological debates on issues of violence, warfare, and Christian ethics. Blessed Are the Peacemakers represents an important statement of Cahill’s refined thought on a spectrum of issues related to these topics. One major aspect of this project is an interesting attempt to reconcile—or perhaps propose a working truce in—the centuries-long debate in Christian ethics between Christian nonviolence/pacifism and the development of the just war traditions among those Christians who believe that violence is occasionally necessary in human affairs, but nevertheless aspire to hold those occasions to moral standards and expectations. In representing this long debate, her historical chapters cover familiar ground, but in a manner that is largely fair, accessible, and at many points quite provocative.
