Summary: | On the last day of October 1872, the young lawyer Bartolo Longo, of Apulian origin, is in the Valley of Pompeii for professional reasons. Under the impetus of an inner storm, he then heads to a district named Arpaia, where he hears within himself an "arcane voice" whispering to him, «If you seek salvation, spread the Rosary». The event is part of an ascetic-mystical-Marian path, which begins with his conversion, after the dark interlude of spiritism, by which he was bewitched during the period of his university studies in Naples. In the light of mystical literature, Longo's lived experience - in the lap of which the entire Pompeian work was conceived - can be identified as a substantial intellectual inner locution.
