The starting point is an apparent tension between two concepts of beauty, located in the framework of St. Basil's exegetical commentary on the biblical account of the six days of Creation. Accordingly, we perceive two ways of appreciating the world in an aesthetic manner: functional and disinterested. If the first perspective underpins the design argument, the second raises the possibility of an aesthetic variant closely linked to the former. Keeping in mind the questions raised by St. Basil, the second section contains two parts: a brief genealogy of the design argument, with the aim of finding the theoretical roots of the aesthetic variant, and the presentation of the argument by Frederick R. Tennant, its most recognizable proponent. Having reviewed the meaning, object and scope of the argument, the third section analyzes the state of art, focusing on its main theoretical challenges, and we delve into one of the most recent contributions, signed by the theologians Richard Swinburne and Kai-man Kwan. Lastly, some conclusions are presented. | ||

Se parte, para ello, de una aparente tensión entre dos conceptos de belleza en el marco del comentario exegético de San Basilio al relato bíblico de los seis días de la Creación. De acuerdo a ello, se perciben dos modos aparentemente contrapuestos de apreciar el mundo en clave estética: funcional, el uno; desinteresado, el otro. Si la primera perspectiva sirve de base al argumento del diseño, la segunda plantea la posibilidad de que exista una variante estética del mismo. Teniendo en mente las cuestiones suscitadas por San Basilio, la segunda sección contiene dos partes: una breve genealogía del argumento del diseño, con el objetivo de encontrar las raíces teóricas de la variante estética, y la presentación del argumento de la mano de Frederick R. Tennant, su impulsor más reconocible. Revisado el sentido, objeto y alcance del argumento, en la tercera sección se analiza el estado de la cuestión en torno a sus principales retos y se profundiza en una de las contribuciones más interesantes, firmada por los teólogos Richard Swinburne y Kai-man Kwan. Se presentan, por último, algunas conclusiones. | ||
