Summary: | Linguistic historiography considers that the first historical grammar of the Catalan language is the work Gramática de la lengua catalana, by Tomàs Forteza, posthumous and unfinished, edited and prologue by Antoni M. Alcover in 1915. Despite this, in 1884 Ignasi Ferrer i Carrió, teacher, columnist, and author of several grammatical works, had published one entitled Gramática histórica de las lenguas castellana y catalana. This grammar, which has the idiosyncrasy of treating in parallel the Spanish and the Catalan languages, is also the first to be presented as historical for the Spanish language, two decades before the Manual elemental de gramática histórica española, by Ramón Menéndez Pidal. In this paper we make an approach to this grammar of Ferrer i Carrió through what is reflected in contemporary periodical publications and through the paratexts of the Gramática histórica de las lenguas castellana y catalana. Even though this grammatical work was not very successful, it presented the novelty of being the first to claim for itself the qualifying of historical. |
