520 |a The Cause of the Martyrs of Fraternity of Burundi includes the 40 Minor Seminarians of Buta, who chose to die together rather than separate by ethnicity during Burundi's 1993-2005 civil war. Popularly venerated as the Martyrs of Fraternity, they have emerged as powerful exemplars of reconciliation. Drawing on 50 interviews conducted in Burundi, this article examines how Burundians understand the Martyrs' testimony, and how their story engages a range of Catholic perspectives on martyrdom, from the classic form of in odio fidei to systematic reflections by Johannes-Baptist Metz and Edward Schillebeeckx, Leonardo Boff, and Hans Urs von Balthasar.
