Descrição
Resumo:It is generally assumed that in the Protestant churches there is a strict reluctance to include the apocryphal writings of the Old Testament among the canonical writings. A look at classical texts ofReformed theology reveals a more differentiated picture. John Calvin in particular, although he opposed the dogmatisation of the canon with theApocrypha in the Council of Trent (1546), recognises in individual apocryphal texts impulses for theology and ethics worth considering. This finding gives reason to re-evaluate the Apocrypha and its use in worship and ethics after centuries. Based on Calvin's pneumatological understanding of Scripture, the article pleads from a Reformed perspective to move away from the affect against the Apocrypha, to assign them anew rank and to make discoveries in their texts.
