Description
Summary:In the side aisles of St. Nikolaus in Brauweiler (west of Cologne), seven stained glass windows created by Franz Pauli in the 1960s belong to a coherent programme referring to the Song of the Three Holy Children (Dan 3) in the version of the Benedicite. In this song, the works of creation are called to praise God and the three children appear as role models in that they refuse to worship an earthly ruler and praise God alone. In the post-war period this message was very relevant. It is directed against any kind of “Führerkult“. The portrayal of Hitler and Adenauer in one of the windows demonstrates that Pauli was interested in such a topical message. A special feature of the pictorial reception of the Benedicte in Brauweiler is that it usually does not depict the works of creation called upon to praise God, but Old Testament narratives in which these works play a role and contribute to the praise of God. The stories are selected in such a way that there are vertical and horizontal references between the individual pictures.
