| Summary: | Because pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela has been an international phenomenon from the Middle Ages to the present day, it is a matter of some interest to discover the origins of this custom. In the present brief essay we will consider first the testimony of the Bible to the life of Santiago, then the frowth of his legend in Late Antiquity, the evidence from the islands of Ireland and Great Britain, in to form of eleven literary texts in Latin, Old Irish, anf Old Englis, four Irish High Crosses and one illuminated manuscript, the dedications of churches, and the emergence of shells from an Irish reliquary and a Scottish grave, and a synod of the British Church, to infer that the tradition of pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela is older than previously supossed. La tradición de la peregrinación a Santiago de Compostela ha sobrevivido, como fenómeno europeo, desde la Edad Media hasta el día de hoy, por lo que resultará muy interesante descubrir los orígenes de esta piadosa práctica. En este breve ensayo vamos a considerar, en primer lugar, el testimonio de la Biblia sobre la vida de Santiago, luego, el crecimiento de su leyenda en la Antigüedad Tardía, y, por último, las varias evidencias encontradas en las islas de Irlanda y Gran Bretaña. Estas son: once textos literarios en latín, irlandés e inglés antiguo; cuatro Cruces Altas irlandesas y un manuscrito iluminado; las dedicaciones de las iglesias y la aparición de las conchas de un relicario irlandés y de un sepulcro escocés; y la evidencia de un sínodo de la iglesia británica, concluyendo de todas estas fuentes que la tradición de la peregrinación a Santiago de Compostela es más antigua de lo que los historiadores han concluido hasta el momento. |
