| Summary: | The present systematic review identified scale development and psychometric evaluation articles in the field of Chinese psychology of religion (PR). Articles were searched in three databases, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), PerioPath, and PsycINFO to locate PR studies published respectively in Mainland China, Taiwan, and internationally. In the 1,682 articles screened, 26 articles (22 unique measures) met the inclusion criteria. These 26 studies were then subjected to an evaluation of their scale development process and psychometric properties. A review of the studies indicated that the majority of measures showed evidence of adequate psychometric properties. However, there were also areas identified in which researchers could improve on, such as incorporating a more comprehensive review of culturally relevant literature and theory, providing more detailed descriptions of the item development process, construct Chinese indigenous scales rather than translating or adapting existing Western measures, and conducting more comprehensive evaluations of psychometric properties (e.g., conduct both exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, examine construct validity). The systematic review also identified an increasing trend of new Chinese indigenous measures being developed, though the number is still low compared to translated Western measures. We encourage PR researchers to further develop culturally indigenous measures to establish a strong foundation for future research in this field. Guidelines on best practices for scale development were provided with an emphasis on cultural sensitivity. |
