| 520 | |a The Bull of Canonization of St. Francis Mira circa nos (Wonders around us) presents the numerous biblical references and figures that Gregory IX needed to interpret the activity and ministry of the citizen of Assisi in the Church. The pope compares St. Francis to various figures of the Old and New Testaments, applying different symbols and images to him. As for the figures, most of the characters referred to by the author come from two books of the Old Testament: Judges and Genesis. In addition to specific people (e.g. Shamgar, Samson, Rachel, Leah), there are also symbolic figures, such as the workers sent to the vineyard. The second category consists of images and symbols that are not human beings: the vineyard, the eleventh hour, the lamp, the jawbone of a donkey. The third includes all the other biblical texts that refer to the new saint. The letter underlines in particular the simplicity, poverty, humility and obedience of St. Francis, an evangelical man who follows the path of Christian virtues and practices an ascetic life, free from everything that hinders him on his journey towards God. For Gregory IX, the holiness of the citizen of Assisi is not based on the stigmata or on extraordinary gifts, but on the following of Christ, the practice of Christian virtues and zeal in carrying out the mission in the Church. | ||
