AB In this study, an integrative approach to hope emphasizing the motives of attachment, mastery, and survival (scioli, 2007; scioli & Biller, 2009) was used to profile adherents of different faiths. Two studies, one qualitative and one quantitative, were conducted. A content analysis of hope references was performed on the sacred literature of eight belief systems. Two independent raters scored each hope reference with respect to mastery, attachment, or survival content. in a second study, a comprehensive self-report measure of hope was made available to the same spectrum of adherents. A pattern of seven hope profiles was found, reflecting different levels of investment in the motives of attachment, mastery, and survival. The quantitative study provided partial support for these hope profiles.
