AB In an ethno-religious ritual individuals use ritual-objects for the purpose of connecting to a group, rather than to God. This article focuses on a unique feature of "ethno-religious" ritual; namely, the ability to create a form of collective identity that does not clearly distinguish between insider and outsider. In contrast to "religious" ritual, ethno-religious ritual does not demand a clear demarcation of sacred and profane. In an ethno-religious ritual, a person might perform the ritual act "incorrectly" or "differently" and is still considered a member of the group. We will explore "ethno-religious ritual," through a case-study of an innovative project designed to enable American and Israeli Jews, from diverse secular and religious backgrounds to study ‘Jewish sources" (i.e., biblical texts and commentaries) together.
