| 520 | |a The private library of Immanuel Benzinger (1865-1935), a Professor of Theology at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Latvia from 1921 till 1935, is one of the remarkable historical collections at disposal of the Library of the University of Latvia. It comprises literature that reflects all areas of Professor Immanuel Benzinger's interests and helped him to achieve the high level of competence in the field of theology, covering a broad spectrum of research materials on the Old Testament, biblical archeology and biblical geography, biblical languages and resources for studying them, etc. This historical collection mostly represents books issued at the end of the 19th century and in the first decades of the 20th century, it also contains editions on history of religion, literature on the Old Testament, historical material about the Holy Land in relation to the three major religions - Christianity, Judaism and Islam, archaeological research in Palestine, Israel, Syria, and other areas of this region, as well as about Ancient Egypt, Babylon and Phoenicia. From about 1300 titles of the items initially less than 700 have survived, as the Library was forced to carry out "a stock purification" of theological literature during the Soviet-era censorship, however, there has still remained the most valuable part of this private collection, ready to be explored and used. | ||
