The author focuses on the Czechoslovakian regions, where Czechs constituted the majority of population, respectively, in Bohemia and Moravia. After the establishment of independence the Church was separated from the state. The political and spiritual elite of the society wanted to introduce extensive changes in the Habsburg heritage received from previous centuries, - the strong influence exercised by the Roman Catholic Church in many areas of life - called a "political Catholicism". The Czech nationally-based Church was linked to two newly established communities or organizations: "Evangelical Czech brothers" (established 1918) and the Czechoslovakian (Hussite) Church (established 1920). The first appeared in result of the split from various Evangelical movements, the second - separated from the Roman Catholic Church. Czech Christians, who wanted to reform the Church and modernize Christianity according to the Zeitgeist and according to the interests of the new national state, laid emphases on the spiritual leader of the 15th century - Jan Hus. They were convinced that the views he proclaimed were quite modern and corresponded to the mentality of the Czech nation.
