Analysing the presence of such seemingly feminist goddesses, like the Mahervashininchya Devi, literally translated as a deity presiding over the fate of married women in their Maher, or parental home. This article places women-centric deities in an anthropological and historical perspective, investigating their emergence as a response to patriarchal oppression. Describing local myths and legends associated with such deities, the article provides a general idea of their rituals and worship, further linking these with present times and the question of women’s emancipation. This linkage provides us with the possibility of further elaborating on the functions of such deities that exert control over a sphere of influence that is both territorial, and simultaneously social in terms of gender relations.
