This familiarity, described here on the basis of data from the Dutch province of North Brabant, found its expression in domestic devotions and rituals and in the religious decoration of the home, often as described by confessional outsiders, who marveled at the 'devotionalia' in Catholic homes. In the course of the 19th century, these 'devotionalia' underwent various innovations; they increased in number, and two-dimensional objects were replaced by three-dimensional ones. Clear examples of this phenomenon are the home devotions surrounding the Holy Family and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. They structured the daily life of the Catholic family in accordance with religious order of the day. Closer comparative research should indicate whether the domestic religious experience in Catholic families in a predominantly Catholic area was different from families in a confessionally mixed area. | ||
