总结:The young Henri Carton de Wiart was, to a certain extent, a rebel. As a literary man and essayist he opposed the strict rules the established Catholic middle class wanted to impose on artists, making a case for artistic freedom. He maintained personal contacts with writers who were fiercely denounced in Catholic circles. He was involved with 'Durendal,' the most important periodical of the Catholic avant-garde and a source of several controversies. Also as a politician he took up positions that brought him into conflict with his mainly socially conservative fellow Christian Democrats. Together with Jules Renkin he gave Brussels Christian Democracy a militant character. However, at the base of Carton de Wiart's social and political policies was a traditionalist and romantic view of society, which may be explained by the ultramontane origins of Christian Democracy. Carton de Wiart's ideology was nationalist in nature, had corporatist characteristics, emphasized the functioning of society, and paid little attention to the individual.
