In the 17th century, the recruitment of priests took place mainly in the towns; however, from the years 1670 to 1685 this urban predominance was affected by a process of growing rural recruitment, especially in the wealthy agricultural areas in the east of the diocese. In addition, church authorities played a role in the recruitment, as seen in the reopening of the episcopal 'theologicum' in 1678. Almost half of these priests were eventually to function in the spiritual care of their dioceses. Their situations and careers were determined to an important extent by the general economic, religious, and political situation. Especially as a result of the breakthrough of the secular clergy, the self-sufficiency of the bishopric, which was to a large extent dependent on priests from local bishoprics, grew after the years 1650-60. | ||
