520 | |a Since the Reformation the authorities in the Republic had acted against pilgrimages and devotions. The result was that by the end of the 18th century, the number of domestic places of pilgrimage was extremely limited. The culture of pilgrimage was dominated by a pattern of behavior that looked beyond the borders, so that mainly foreign places of pilgrimage were visited. This contribution describes which places of pilgrimage still existed around the period 1795-1814 in the Netherlands, by whom these places were visited, what ritual patterns of behavior were exhibited, and what role was fulfilled by the clergy in these rites. The influence of the Enlightenment, the French Revolution, the Batavian revolution of 1795, and the French government on the culture of pilgrimage is examined. The new freedom of religion in 1795 gave new impulses to initiatives toward pilgrimage and effected a growing interest in the old cult places, but these years proved to be mainly a period of continuity in which no major changes took place. The period had a decisive influence on the reconstruction, later in the 19th century, of a large-scale national culture of pilgrimage, with its own sacral landscape of old and revitalized holy places. | ||
