Description
Summary:Catholic poor relief in Haarlem was given its own organization in the 18th century, under strong pressure from the town magistrate. The burden of the Catholic poor, which had until then been borne partly by the town chaplains, thereby became the exclusive responsibility of those of the same religious persuasion. The city appointed a board of high church wardens to supervise poor relief and manage the separate stations. A "station" is a religious community connected with a priest in the Dutch mission. The stipulation that the high church wardens were to submit any problems or arguments to city officials caused the latter to take upon themselves the task of referee in internal Catholic conflicts. They interfered in matters of membership, appointments of priests, financial administration of the stations, and conflicts between Roman Catholics and followers of the Old Catholic Church. These matters can be seen as indications of a redefinition of the position of Catholics in the Netherlands in the course of the 18th century.
