The oldest of the three was that of conservative political Catholicism, pragmatically liberal in orientation, which dominated the Catholic party until World War II. The second was traditional Christian democracy, which came into existence around 1891, had roots in intransigent Catholicism as well as liberal Catholic practice, and defended social reforms from a Christian perspective. Starting out as a popular movement, Christian democracy came to be almost exclusively associated with the Christian labor movement in the interwar period, although the latter always clung to the solidarism of Catholic sociology. Within the Catholic party it constituted the opposite of the conservative movement. The third and last area of support consisted of the Catholic movement that arose in the 1930's as a result of criticism of "liberal democracy." This last movement advocated personalism and held a firmly corporative view of society. It was the last two movements in particular that determined the profile of the Christelijke Volkspartij as it was expressed in the Christmas program of 1945.
