| Summary: | The monument to Ghisbertus Masius (bishop of 's Hertogenbosch, 1593-1614) in St. John's Cathedral at 's Hertogenbosch is the only postmedieval monumental bishop's tomb in the Netherlands. It is attributed to Hans van Mildert (158?-1638), the Antwerp sculptor of German descent, who was a friend and assistant of Rubens. The author discusses this attribution on the basis of comparisons with other surviving works by van Mildert and examines the history of the monument as well as possible sources on inspiration, both with regard to its location in the church and with regard to its iconography. Its location is compared with that of other bishops' tombs in the Netherlands and the Rhineland. Iconographically, it is compared with other monuments featuring kneeling figures, particularly Castilian and Habsburg monuments, which were probably familiar to the patron and to the sculptor through the influence of the archducal court at Brussels, and through the painter-diplomat Rubens. |
