Reading edifying books was one of the daily duties of 'kloppen.' Although little is known about their reading, the available facts indicate a possible discrepancy between what they were supposed to read and what they actually read. Research on this point is complicated by lack of clarity about what books should be counted among the 'kloppenboeken,' a genre that is defined here. It includes so-called books of instruction as well as certain "vitae." Discussion of their respective characteristics centers on an analysis of the "ideal spiritual virgin," noting two constants: virginity and obedience. | ||
