| Summary: | Sufism is generally considered a roadmap, while walking on the track of Islam, which leads tofind out ultimate truth and for "divine union" of an individual. History of Sufism revealed thatSufi orders (Silsilahs) was systematically institutionalized first in Indian subcontinent during themedieval period. Sufis teaching lasted considerable socio-religious, cultural and even political,impact on Indian society at that time. Uprising of different Sufi Silsilahs in India accelerated themomentum of Sufis ideology and practices in Muslim as well as non-Muslim communities.Sufism largely contributed in assimilation of Muslims within existing Indian religions andsociety during the period. Modern historians and social scientist are therefore, revisiting historyof different Sufis Silsilahs to unfold different layers of Sufism. In India, Suhrawardiyyah was anearly Sufi Silsilah, but has been less discussed generally and very limited by the modernscholars. This paper would fill this gap in academic world of Sufism and build a strongunderstanding regarding inception of Sufism in India, at general, and particularly flourishing ofSuhrawardiyyah Silsilah by focusing founding Sufi’s practices and ideas during 13th and 14thcenturies. |
