Summary: | Unemployment has been a major problem in most countries in the world. Nigeria, as a developing country is witnessing high rate of youth unemployment which has become one of the major threats to its national security. The study examines the types and causes of youth unemployment in Nigeria, its effects on national security and ways to tackle unemployment as a means to improve the level of national security. Also, a statistical rate of youth unemployment by states in Nigeria from 2004-2008 was analysed. The findings showed that one of the major reasons for unemployment is that the growth of education has far outstripped the growth of the economy in which the supply of jobs cannot meet the demand of the graduates moving out of the tertiary institution. The study concludes that youth unemployment is a menace in the country that deserves governmental and societal solicitude. |
